Newcastle Hunters get beached by Manly in WABL basketball
Manly Warringah Sea Eagles proved too strong for both Newcastle Hunters teams in the Waratah Australian Basketball League (WABL) last Saturday at the Northern Beaches Indoor Centre.
In the women’s game the Sea Eagles jumped to a 24 - 18 lead at the end of the first quarter and continued their dominance to lead by 44 – 30 at the main break. Although the Hunters pegged back seven points in the final quarter, the Sea Eagles mastery in the first three resulted in a win by 81 – 71. Top scorers for Newcastle were Kristen Forbes with 25 and Dimity Stewart with 18.
The Hunters men currently in third place on the ladder were expected to easily account for the 10th placed Manly, but the Sea Eagles clearly had other ideas. They jumped to a 22 – 10 lead at the end of the first quarter, were held by the Hunters in the next two quarters with the score favouring Manly by 62 – 51 going into the fourth. Manly got the better of the Hunters in the final term by 26 – 11 to take the match by 88 – 62.
Top scorers for the Hunter men were Matt Fogg (13) and Allan Swyston (12). Swyston also picked up 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 4 blocks.
In the next round on Saturday June 20, both Newcastle teams take on the Parramatta Wildcats at Newcastle Basketball Stadium with the women’s game tipping off at 5pm and the men’s at 7pm.
The Maitland Mustangs were defeated in their last match by the Norths Bears by 94 – 87. Their next game is against the Hornsby Spiders at The Brickpit – Dartford Rd Indoor Stadium on Saturday June 20 beginning at 4pm.
