Maitland captures Newcastle Hunters in Waratah Basketball
In last weekend’s Waratah Australian Basketball local derby between the Maitland Mustangs and Newcastle Hunters men’s teams the Mustangs proved too strong for the bottom placed Hunters.
Although the Hunters finished the third quarter leading by 22 to 19 this proved to be a false dawn. The Mustangs took control in the second and third quarters scoring 28 points in each while the Hunters could only manage 16 and 18 points respectively. Going into the final quarter the Mustangs led by 75 to 56. Although Newcastle won the last quarter by 29 to 27 it was too late and the Maitland ran out easy winners 102 – 85.
Top scorers for Maitland were Andrew Mortimore (27), Daniel Proctor (24) and Joshua Clifford (18). For Newcastle Mathew McGovern scored 28 while Lachlan Harben made 14 and John Martin 12.
Next Saturday, July 4, the 8th placed Mustangs take on Bankstown Bruins at the Maitland Federation Centre at 6pm. The Newcastle Hunters face the Sutherland Sharks at the Newcastle Basketball Stadium on the same day with the women’s game tipping off at 3pm and the men’s at 7pm.
