Newcastle women miss out on state basketball finals weekend
While Newcastle’s Waratah Basketball teams did not make the play-offs, the region still had two women’s teams in the State League play-offs. Unfortunately both missed out on progressing to the finals weekend at Sutherland on August 8 – 9.
The Newcastle Youth Women’s team could be considered unlucky in losing by only 3 points to the Bathurst Goldminers. The Goldminers led by 43 to 37 at half time and while the Hunters close the gap in the second half it was not enough and they went down by 74 – 71 at the end. Top scorers for Newcastle were S Kleeman (19), H Young (13) and A Gill (11). For the Goldminers, T Burke (29) and R Murray (23) dominated the scoring.
In State League Women’s Division 1, the Newcastle Hunters were no match for the Central Coast Crusaders who won 104-45 after leading 47-16 at half time. The Crusaders scoring saw I Forrest score an astonishing 55 points. For Newcastle the top scorers were A Craig (11), C Mascord (9) and T Sutherland (7).
