Leading to Daniel getting upset and the lesson of...
There are some great lessons to be learned from Karate and from this movie that you can translate to your business.
Wait a minute Paul, you’re losing it; well, hang on just a minute and stay with me and let’s see.
Daniel really wanted to learn Karate, however Mr Miyagi made him wax and polish cars, sand floors ... Obviously not as fun as 'learning karate' but it turned out that the not-so-fun part of waxing the cars, sanding floors, painting fences, actually taught important karate moves and building a foundation for the more 'fun' parts.
And speaking of foundations … houses (and businesses) require them too. I am not going to help you try and put the roof on your house before you have put up the walls, laid the foundations, or even planned out what the house will look like.
So, in respect of your business ask yourself this question.
Do I have in place the necessary foundations for my business?
Or
Do my foundations need some repairs or renovations?
Well, Paul, just what would you consider part of the foundations of a good, solid and profitable business?
Well for starters:
• Do you have Strategic and Business Plans for your business?
• Do you know what the Vision and Mission are for your business?
• Do you have a comprehensive, Marketing Plan (and budget) for your business?
• Can you articulate what your Unique Selling Proposition (USP) is?
• Do you and your staff undertake regular sales training (not just on product knowledge)?
• Is your business systematised? Can it run without you? If not I’ve got news for you – you have a job - a job you may have bought yourself.
• Do I have a succession plan in place? What’s that you say! Well you’re not getting any younger – how will you ensure you leave a legacy – if indeed you’ve even thought about it?
If you are clear on your business and where you want to head, you will have the necessary focus.
Whereas, if you are not clear, you will wander around in the wilderness (a bit like the children of Israel when Moses led them out of Egypt. Yes, you know the story of the Ten Commandments. Here’s a real insight, because of their lack of focus they wandered around in the desert for 40 years. The journey should have taken them less than two weeks!!! Now, that’s some detour.
What about you and your business?
Are you wandering around in the proverbial “business wilderness” unnecessarily?
Perhaps it’s time you stopped avoiding the foundational matters or, if you have them in place, then great. Perhaps you need ongoing expert help to help you move to the next level.
