McPherson, Guest lead Newcastle junior cricket honours with two centuries

So far in the 2009-10 Newcastle junior cricket season only one player, Kyle McPherson of Sothern Lakes Green has scored a century in the 16/17 Division 1 competition. However, McPherson not only scored a ton (102 not out) in round 2 against Belmont Gold but also followed this up with 102 not out against Waratah Mayfield in round 3.

In 14 division 1, Valentine Eleebana Blue’s Liam Guest is the only batsmen to score a century but like McPherson has scored two. He scored 113 not out in round 2 against Southern Lakes and then followed this up with 107 not out against Warners Bay Cardiff Maroon in round 6. He also appears 4 other times on the batting honours board with scores of 84 not out, 77 not out, 68, and 61.

In the 15/16 Division 1 competition no centuries have been scored with Wallsend’s Cameron Roxby the best with 73 against Charlestown in round 7. For more batting honours in the various grades go to: http://www.newcric.org.au/common/pages/public/rv/cricket/battinghof.aspx?redirect=1&

Bowling honours in 16/17 division 1 are led by Belmont Gold’s Bradley Richardson who took 5 for 6 against Charlestown in round 4. In the 15/16 division 1, Luke Coleman from Belmont Gold heads the list with 5 wickets for 4 runs in round 4 against Colts.

In the under 14 division 1 two bowlers have taken 5 wickets or more in an innings. Charlestown’s Isaac Wallace took 5 for 16 against Colts in round 2, while also in the same round Courtney Moulton took 5 for 34 against Southern Lakes.

In the under 13 division 1 grade, Western Suburbs Jack Westbury leads the bowlers with 5 for 30 taken in round 5 against Wallsend RSL. For more bowling honours in other grades go to: http://www.newcric.org.au/common/pages/public/rv/cricket/bowlinghof.aspx?redirect=1&

Newcastle wins 3 junior cricket carnivals

Under 11 Ron Arendts Carnival: Over 4 days, 10 teams played the carnival with Newcastle DCA winning a couple of very tight games, including the final against a very competitive Central Coast.

Newcastle held Central Coast to 110 in 38 overs, and when batting achieved victory with 8 wickets down with a couple of overs to spare. Based on the player batting and bowling stats for the Carnival, this win was truly based on a team performance with runs and wickets shared. Newcastle’s Daniel Chillingworth was awarded Player of the Carnival.

Special mention should be made of the Newcastle Presidents who also won 2 games. For both teams their introduction to representative cricket this season has not been an easy path and both showed in the carnival the huge steps they have made.

Under 15 Hunter Valley Carnival: This carnival was played at Raymond Terrace with the final between Newcastle and Central Coast.

The Newcastle team won the match, providing the Central Coast team with its first loss in about 5 seasons.
Central Coast batted first and their powerful batting line up was held by some very good bowling to a total of 165. Callum Single bowled very well, in particular closing out the Central Coast innings in the late overs. Newcastle started its innings a bit slowly but without losing a wicket early. Then came an outstanding partnership, in very hot conditions, between Ben Evans and Rhys Hanlon to set up the Newcastle push to victory.

At the presentation, Callum Single won the bowling award for most wickets in the carnival, and Ben Evans emerged with his wily leg spinners to take the bowling averages award. A special mention for Ben who took 8 wickets in an innings on the Wednesday. Jarrod Single helped out with fielding through the first 2 days.

Newcastle also won the under 14 Graeme Malcolm Carnival. To follow news, draws and results for Newcastle junior cricket go to: http://www.newcric.org.au/home.aspx?
